Artificial immune system(AIS) are at the forefront of artificial int elligence research. This paper begins by analyzing commonness and clustering fea tures in solving practical engineering problems with AIS. The application proble ms related to AIS in different engineering fields were then classified into seve ral typical categories of engineering problems. On that basis, the concept of en gineering immune computing (EIC) was abstracted and formed. After this definitio n of EIC was presented, the conceptual meaning of EIC and the relationship betwe en EIC and AIS were explained. A research framework for EIC was constructed, and its constituents were discussed in detail. From two aspects namely immune desig n for problem solving and immune design for product evolution, the method of pro duct design based on EIC was addressed to take product design as an example to f urther state the engineering application based on EIC. Referring to the present application status of AIS in engineering fields and the existing problems, perspectives in the application of EIC were discussed. In particular, developmental directions of the applicati on of EIC in the field of product design were prospected. The presentation of th e concept of EIC expands the research scope of AIS and can provide efficient me thodological guidance for applying AIS to solve complex problems in engineering practice.
