The process of assessing lake water quality , as viewed from the perspective of data f usion , is a process involving multi2source data f usion and state estimation. This paper proposes using fuzzy-evidence t heory to assess the eut rop hication of lake water based on degrees of similarity. . On one hand , by introducing degrees of similarity wit h fuzzy set s , the weight s of f uzzy focal element s are determined and t he evidence model is modified. On the other hand , by using t he degree of similarity with fuzzy set s , t he contribution factor s of fuzzy focal element s to the belief functions of focal element s of the class are determined , and models of state estimation and assessment are established which can handle problems due to obvious changes in some focal elements induced by abrupt changes of lake water eutrophication. This proposed met hod was tested by water eut rop hication assessment of Taihu lake in China. Results were analyzed and compared with those obtained by t he t rop hic stat us index method , indicating that the proposed method based on degree of similarity is feasible for water quality assessment .
