Newell, Show and Simon’s “logic theorist” (LT) was the only tangib le (programmed) example of artificial intelligence (AI) at the Dartmouth worksho p in June 1956, which declared the birth of artificial intelligence and was the central event celebrated at this meeting. In this article, we discuss two of He rbert Simon’s research directions during his last years—learning from examples and multiple representations. The authors were involved in these researches as his students, colleagues and friends. This paper was dedicated as a memorial to H erb ert Simon (19162001).
