- Abstract:

This paper reviews the history and present state of artificial immune systems (AIS) research. The development of engineeringoriented AIS was explored from the background of natural computing, including some important branches of immunocomputing, immune inspired software systems and hardware systems, etc. This avoided focusing only on AIS algorithms. Based on current developments, problems facing AIS were analyzed and future developments discussed. The aim was to extend the scope of AIS research and promote immunology as a subject worthy of more attention in engineering research, thus realizing the potential of AIS.
