Ensuring safety in production is crucial for the national economy, with a core focus on maintaining system safety. At the system level, safety is viewed as the state function of the system. However, uncertainties in studying these state functions can lead research to deviate from real-world scenarios. To solve these problems, it is necessary to use research methods that accommodate the uncertainties of the system’s function states, such as set pair analysis theory. This study discusses the advantages of using set pair analysis to tackle uncertainties in system functional states. First, it explains the causes of these uncertainties. Second, it reviews the current research status of set pair analysis and its application in the safety field. It then outlines the integration of set pair analysis and space fault networks. Finally, it highlights how set pair analysis enhances system safety research. This review aims to underscore the strengths of set pair analysis in handling uncertain problems, helping readers to understand its origins, role, and advantages, ultimately encouraging its application in safety analysis across various industries.
